Council of Ephesus
Council of Ephesus, Cyril of Alexandria: Anathema V
Selected letters, decrees and canons, including Cyril’s anathemas with reception notes; not the full proceedings
Cyril of Alexandria: Anathema V
If anyone shall dare to say that the Christ is a Theophorus [that is, God-bearing] man and not rather that he is very God, as an only Son through nature, because “the Word was made flesh,” and “hath a share in flesh and blood as we do:” let him be anathema.
Edition and transmission
Cyril of Alexandria authored this text. The source editor discusses uncertainty about its formal approval at Ephesus and its subsequent conciliar reception. It is preserved as received doctrinal material, not as an undisputed text newly authored by the council.
